GNU Users Groups

Submitting groups to be listed

If you know of a GNU/Linux or GNU/Hurd User Group that is not listed on this page, please let us know. Write to <user-groups@gnu.org> with the group's full name and other contact information, including the URL of the group's web site if it has one. If your group's information on this page is out of date, you can use the same method to update it.

If you are forming a GNU/Linux User Group, we ask that you avoid acronyms that contain “lug” (unless part of “glug”). Those acronyms will lead people to assume that it is a Linux User Group, in effect giving an incorrect impression. Be creative—don't assume the group's name must have “lug” or “glug” in it. If your group would like to change from a “lug” name to another name, and getting a new domain is an obstacle, please ask the FSF to help.

A note about Free Software user groups

On this page we list user groups that are centered on variations of the GNU operating system. Other user groups are not centered on any set of programs, but instead on Free Software itself. We have created a special page for those groups—Free Software Users Groups.

A note about GNU/Linux user groups

We list GNU/Linux User Groups—that is, user groups that describe themselves as “GNU/Linux” User Groups, and make an effort to distinguish the GNU/Linux operating system from Linux, the kernel. We don't list “Linux User Groups” on this page, but we invite them to become GNU/Linux User Groups and help correct the widespread confusion about the system.

We also do not list groups which focus on ‘open source’, since we are not part of the open source movement, but rather the free software movement. We also do not list groups that promote proprietary software as part of their activities.
