أعلن ريتشارد ستولمان في سبتمبر 1983 خطة تطوير نظام تشغيل حر شبيه بيونكس سمّاه غنو. غنو هو نظام التشغيل الوحيد المٌطوّر خصيصًا من أجل حرية المستخدمين.
ما هو غنو؟
The GNU Project was launched in 1984 to develop a complete Unix-like operating system which is free software: the GNU operating system.
Unix-like operating systems are built from a collection of libraries, applications and developer tools, plus a kernel to allocate resources and talk to the hardware — Hurd, GNU's kernel is actively developed, but is still some way from being ready for daily use, so GNU is often used with the kernel Linux.
The combination of GNU and Linux is the GNU/Linux operating system, now used by millions.
أحيانا يسمّى هذا المزج خطأ لينكس. هناك العديد من تنويعات أو “توزيعات” غنو/لينكس.
نوصي بتوزيعات غنو/لينكس التي تعتبر برمجيات حرة 100%؛ أو بمعنى آخر: التي تحترم الحرية تماما.

ما هي البرمجيات الحرة؟

تركز البرمجيات الحرة على حرية المستخدمين في تشغيل ونشر ودراسة وتعديل وتحسين البرمجيات. بشكل أكثر دقة، تشير لأربع أنواع من الحرية، لمستخدمي هذه البرمجيات:
- الحرية في تشغيل البرنامج لأي غرض (حرية 0).
- الحرية في دراسة كيفية عمل البرنامج، وتعديله ليتكيف مع احتياجاتك (حرية 1). الوصول لكود المصدر شرط رئيسي لهذا.
- الحرية في إعادة توزيع نسخ وبذلك تستطيع مساعدة جارك (حرية 2).
- الحرية في تطوير البرنامج، ونشر تحسيناتك للعامة، بحيث يستفيد منها كل المجتمع (حرية 3). الوصول لكود المصدر شرط رئيسي لذلك.
ما هي مؤسسة البرمجيات الحرة؟
مؤسسة البرمجيات الحرة (إفإسإف) هي الراعي الرسمي التنظيمي لمشروع غنو. تستلم إفإسإف تمويلا بسيطا من الشركات أو من المؤسسات المانحة للهبات ولكنها تعتمد على الأفراد مثلك.
