What We Provide

What the FSF provides to computer users, above all, is the chance to use a computer in freedom—using free software.

Since 1985 the FSF has sponsored the development of the free software operating system GNU. The GNU/Linux variant of GNU is already widely used. The GNU/Hurd system, based on our GNU Hurd kernel, is ready for wizards and enthusiasts to try. A wide variety of GNU software in general is available for download.

Things you can obtain directly from the FSF include:

[FSF logo] “Our mission is to preserve, protect and promote the freedom to use, study, copy, modify, and redistribute computer software, and to defend the rights of Free Software users.”

The Free Software Foundation is the principal organizational sponsor of the GNU Operating System. Support GNU and the FSF by buying manuals and gear, joining the FSF as an associate member, or making a donation, either directly to the FSF or via Flattr.
