GNU Wdiff

The GNU wdiff program is a front end to diff for comparing files on a word per word basis. A word is anything between whitespace. This is useful for comparing two texts in which a few words have been changed and for which paragraphs have been refilled. It works by creating two temporary files, one word per line, and then executes diff on these files. It collects the diff output and uses it to produce a nicer display of word differences between the original files.

Downloading Wdiff

Wdiff can be found on the main GNU ftp server: http://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/wdiff/ (via HTTP) and ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/wdiff/ (via FTP). It can also be found on the GNU mirrors; please use a mirror if possible.

Access to the latest source code is available to developers as described in more detail in the developer's guide. Please note that we do not suggest using wdiff sources from development sources for production use.

Documentation

Documentation for Wdiff is available online, as is documentation for most GNU software. You may also find more information about Wdiff by running info wdiff or man wdiff, or by looking at /usr/doc/wdiff/, /usr/local/doc/wdiff/, or similar directories on your system. A brief summary is available by running wdiff --help.

Mailing lists

Wdiff has the following mailing lists:

Announcements about Wdiff and most other GNU software are made on info-gnu (archive).

Announcements about Wdiff are also available from the Savannah news archive.

Getting involved

Development of Wdiff, and GNU in general, is a volunteer effort, and you can contribute. For information, please read How to help GNU. If you'd like to get involved, it's a good idea to join the discussion mailing list (see above).

Development
For development sources, issue trackers, and other information, please see the Wdiff project page at savannah.gnu.org. The developer's guide has a lot more details for those wishing to contribute code or documentation.
Reporting bugs
There are two means of dealing with bugs, the Savannah bug tracker and the wdiff-bugs mailing list. Before reporting a new bug, please search at least the list of open bug reports in the bug tracker. A search through the mailing list archives will include bugs reported by mail or web interface, and is therefore likely to increase the number of hits for your search.
Translating Wdiff
To translate Wdiff's messages into other languages, please see the Translation Project page for Wdiff. If you have a new translation of the message strings, or updates to the existing strings, please have the changes made in this repository. Only translations from this site will be incorporated into Wdiff. For more information, see the Translation Project.
Maintainer
Wdiff is currently being maintained by Martin von Gagern. Please use the mailing lists for contact.
