Wprowadzenie
Od dawna wspieramy publikację wolnej dokumentacji (nie mamy na myśli gratis). Wolne oprogramowanie potrzebuje wolnej dokumentacji, ponieważ musicie mieć możliwość kopiowania, zmiany i redystrybucji dokumentacji razem z oprogramowaniem. Żeby mogła zostać uznana za wolną, dokumentacja musi być wydana na licencji wolnej dokumentacji.
Sami publikujemy dużą ilość wolnych książek. Możecie zamówić drukowane kopie naszych książek,
pobrać je z katalogu /gnu/Manuals naszego serwera ftp a także przeglądać je online. Działamy w ten
sposób od około 1986 roku.
Ostatnio niektórzy komercyjni wydawcy zaczęli publikować wolne książki (tak samo jak nasze – są one wolne w sensie swobody korzystania, ale komercyjnie drukowane egzemplarze są sprzedawane). Na tej stronie prowadzimy listę tego rodzaju książek, na które się natknęliśmy. Jeśli dowiecie się o jakiejś wolnej książce, której tutaj nie wymieniono, dajcie nam znać o tym, wysyłając wiadomość na adres <free-books@gnu.org>.

- Wydanie z czerwca 2001 nie miało poprawnej informacji na temat licencji. Zawierało stwierdzenie, że jest to książka prawnie zastrzeżona. Wydawca zapewnił nas, że był to wyłącznie błąd drukarski i że zamierzoną licencją jest „Open Publication License, Version 1.0, bez wykorzystania opcjonalnych warunków”. Opublikowana przez wydawnictwo errata potwierdza te informacje. Zostaliśmy zapewnieni, że następne wydanie będzie miało poprawioną informację o licencji.
- Uwaga dotycząca Linux Device Drivers, Second Edition:
- Drukowane wydanie nie stosuje się we właściwy sposób do licencji GNU FDL – brakuje kopii GNU FDL, a notka licencyjna jest niekompletna. O'Reilly naprawi te błędy w następnym wydaniu.
